THE ACCESS · START WITH THE KIDNEY · THE PRIMER

The Kidney

One organ does about seven everyday jobs at once. When it stops, each job is handed to a separate machine, pill, or service — this map shows that hand-off, job by job.
Tap any job to open what now does it, then the service around it — or open the whole map at once.
THE KIDNEY
Two fist-sized organs do about seven everyday jobs at once, your whole life — until they don’t. Everything on this map is here because they can stop.
LAYER 1 — THE JOBS
Dialysis handles about five of the seven jobs — the other two are handled by pharmacy products.
CLEANING & BALANCING — FIVE JOBS
LAYER 2 — NOW DONE BY
a machine filters the blood, OR the body’s own belly lining is used as the filter
NOTE — THE BELLY-LINING OPTION a living, borrowed lining — it works, but it wears out over time.
NOTE — ITS CHECK-UP TEST a simple efficiency check — but fast cleaning can mean weaker fluid removal.

That’s why someone on dialysis is also, always, a pharmacy customer.
THE ONE EXCEPTION — A REPLACEMENT THAT DOES ALL SEVEN
a transplanted kidney handles all seven jobs again — the best option — but donor kidneys are scarce, so most people use the piece-by-piece replacements.

Hand-offs — a job passes to its replacement, then to the machine
The one highlighted link — the two messenger jobs go to pharmacy, not to a machine
